Schools may have just gotten out, but I’ve always got desk supplies on my mind. As a paper person, I’m constantly on the hunt for pretty, functional stationery and desk accessories that make sitting down for an afternoon of bill paying, calendar planning, and package-wrapping a little bit more fun.
In fact, when I’m visiting a new city, I usually make it a habit of seeking out local stationery shops to see if I can discover new lines of paper and supplies. I’ll never forget the shop I found in Paris during a visit back in 2015. The owner had posted up envelopes she’d received from customers all over the world. Beautiful penmanship, multi-colored lettering, and vibrant envelopes came together to form an eye-catching collage on the wall behind her point-of-sale desk. I took a picture so that I’d never forget how warm just seeing it made me feel.
My current office is tucked away into a closet, and contains a vintage school teacher’s desk, rolling file cabinet, and craft cart stuffed to the gills with photo props and supplies. My husband built and installed a sturdy open shelf on the wall to contain my boxes of envelopes, old printed goods, magazines, and printing resource books.
I’ve been itching to revamp the space a bit, get more organized , and declutter a bit. With a little more breathing room, I’m hoping to invest in some simple, elegant pieces that will make the space that much more appealing and useful.
In my thirties, I’ve become much more conscious of my consumer tendencies, opting to spend far less often, but much more intentionally. I’d prefer to purchase thoughtfully—things that matter, that will last. A well-stocked desk is a no brainer for me. I want to have the supplies I need to send a timely note to a friend or wrap up a “just-because” little something for my husband because I value being the kind of person that does those things. So, this is one area of life where I like to put my money where my mouth is.
If that’s you, too, you may have the desire without the time needed to track down all the lovely ingredients you might be after to create your own little stationery oasis. Have no fear! I’ve done it all for you. Just consider this your back-to-school list, all typed out and ready for you to go through, checking off boxes.
Below, I’ve compiled the supplies I think every desk needs. I’ve scoured the internet and in-person stationery shops for the very best items I could find in each category—only the cream of the crop for my ideal office. If you care to learn what I found, download my curated list below.
