Just Hear Those Sleigh Bells Ringing
The bells are ringing. Faintly. In the distance. But, they are ringing, I tell you. Holiday season will be here before we all know it, and I certainly don’t want to be caught unawares. The older I get, the more and more I want to be on top of the logistics and planning of fun things so when the time rolls around to enjoy them, I can. Call me crazy, but that’s why I’ve started a pinterest board/spreadsheet situation already to log gift ideas. I’m already pinning recipes for the few days that we’ll be entertaining guests and thinking ahead to how to budget for it all. This is a huge improvement from years past, and I’m certain it’s going to make for a much more enjoyable season.
With that, of course, I’m already thinking about holiday cards, and don’t worry friend, I’ve got your back too! I’m polishing off my sophisticated, semi-custom designs in the coming days and will be officially launching them in my shop this month where you’ll be able to make your selections with a few clicks, rather than having to trade emails and sift through the options in a way that can feel overwhelming. I wanted to streamline this process and make it as easy possible for you so that you can rest easy while shopping small—knowing that even when you’re not shopping with big-machine sites and shops, you can still get what you need in a timely manner.
Below are just six reasons why it pays off to shop small.
You Can Work with a Person
Working with small businesses is often an opportunity to, in part, get to know the heart of the creative person behind the business. Bigger production companies are often faceless, and the ordering process is often pretty impersonal. The more and more we shop online, the less chance we have to remember that there are makers behind the wares we buy. But, shopping small is a way to remember there’s at least one person behind every product!
2. You Know Directly Who Your Business Supports - Real Families
Along the same lines as the above sentiment, shopping small allows you to know exactly who your purchase can positively impact. When you purchase from me, you can know that that is blessing an actual family—helping me to be able to purchase shoes and clothes for ever-so-quickly baby girl.
3. You Know Directly Who Your Business Supports - a Cause
Many smaller companies are still able to give back charitably to a cause that matters to them. You can often search a site or just ask a maker if their proceeds ever go to any nonprofits or organizations. In my case, I collect a percentage of my sales and donate to the art program at a local school. It may not be much, but every little bit helps when it comes to giving others the opportunity to spark their own creativity.
4. The Process Can Be Just as Simple
As mentioned above, many small businesses know what they’re up against and they’re doing everything they can to make sure that the ordering system is user-friendly and easy. While I used to treat holiday cards on a wholly custom basis, I’ve moved to the semi-custom model and moved the ordering process to my shop to make it all quicker and more simple than ever before. You’ve got a lot on your plate. Ordering holiday cards should be fun, and it shouldn’t be hassle.
5. You Can Customize Until Your Heart’s Content
The benefit of working more one-on-one with smaller companies is that you can make tweaks and customizations to your order. You don’t want your cards looking like every other that comes through your neighbor’s mailbox this season, so take advantage of the ways in which working with a small shop can set yours apart. For example, I’ll be adding a couple of add-ons to cards this year, including envelope liners and gift tags!
6. You Can Start NOW!
You don’t have to wait until holiday card promotions start. You can get going on the process now so you can rest later. If you haven’t already, start gathering up your addresses and photos (or schedule a shoot with a friend or photographer). It may just be October, but you’ll be so glad you started early when the temps start dropping and the snow starts falling.
