I can’t believe it, but my due date is soon approaching. As I write, I’m just about a month out from when our little boy or girl will join the family. I’ve taken some time to think through how things will look as I take a little step back from the business and work while we all make the adjustment. For all current and/or upcoming clients, here’s what you need to know!
My plan (at this point) is to unplug during from May 14-July 31st. I am working hard to finish up custom client work now, and will not be printing during this time. See below for how I’ll handle onboarding new clients and taking other kinds of work.
Emails and Client Correspondence
Since I started my business over nine years ago, I’ve never really done this, so I’m wading in some unknown territory here. While I do want to give our family some time to hunker down and enjoy each other without distraction, my hope is to get back to business after a little while. If that means initiating contact with a few longer-term clients during my time off, I’m happy to do that, but I will not begin any work in earnest until after I return in July.
That said, here is the email* I plan on setting up as my auto-responder, starting May 14th:
Thanks so much for your email. I am currently on maternity leave until the end of July, 2018. We are so excited to welcome a baby into our family this summer!
If you are a current or potential client, you are very important to me! You will hear from me as soon as possible. If you are inquiring about save the dates, wedding invitations, or calligraphy, I am still accepting bookings during this time and I forward to connecting with you. I will not begin work until after I return from my leave in July, but am happy to begin the custom process with you as your deadlines allow.
Other emails received will be deleted from my inbox, which may seem extreme. But I know how important it is to completely step away from my business in order to be fully present with my family during this time. If you would like to get in touch with me, please resend your email when I’m back at work beginning in mid-July.
Thank you so much for your understanding!
Flash Studio Sale
It’s not just the nestiness talking here. I’ve wanted to do a little studio refresh for ages. Before I sign off for a little while, I’ll be hosting a flash sale of old work (cards, prints, etc) on Instagram. I’ll be selling things for SUPER CHEAP, so if you don’t mind taking a trip down memory lane for some of my older work, then stay tuned. I’ll be sharing more of the details about the sale both here and on social media, but mark your calendars for May 11-14th. The plan is to release products a few at a time and ship out to customers that week. Once things are gone, they’re gone!
The Online Shop
My online shop is now composed of both semi-custom and finished products. My plan is to leave the shop open, with the caveat that all semi-custom pieces will not be shipped until after I return from leave (ie: personalized note cards, occasion postcards, custom wax seals, and rubber stamps). All other goods (ie: recipe cards, posters, prints) will still be for sale during this time.
I'm going to play this one by ear a little bit. As far as my newsletter, instagram, and blog content, I'll be slowing way down. It's possible I'll want to send out a few updates here and there, so it may not be complete radio silence. It's highly likely, however, that I will not be following my regularly scheduled programming of weekly blog posts (Wednesdays), biweekly newsletters, and daily instagram posts.
I’m excited to have some time to take a step back and dream about upcoming projects. I’ll still plan on doing a holiday card collection for release this fall, and I’ve got some thoughts rumbling around about a collection of semi-custom baby announcements. Of course, custom wedding work will re-commence as soon as I’m back in action and able to fit in front of the press.
I’m looking forward to returning with fresh energy and a new perspective in a few months. Thanks as always for your support and kindness!
