I absolutely adore creating custom work for people. It truly is a joy and privilege to put ink to other people's vision and ideas. That said, it's been a while since I've created something that I dreamed up myself.
Lately, however, a little free time and energy have afforded me the opportunity to let my mind wander a bit. But, even when it does, my own ideas and work are often informed by the wisdom of others. Don't we all just stand on each other's shoulders, after all?
The inspiration for this particular piece was two-fold. It draws its first breath from Jeremiah 6:16, which says:
Thus says the LORD: "Stand by the roads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is; and walk in it, and find rest for your souls."
I am increasingly thankful that I don't have to discover for myself the way to abundant life. There are well-paved paths that lead me there. I am wise if I let trusted teachers guide me, if I stay in the lanes that discipline constructs. The way forward is truly backward-glancing.
One of my favorite songwriters knows this tune. I love the way he paints his words, rescuing me from wind-tossed waves and unto the ancient mast of Christ.
